About

Character Heat Index ranks anime and manga characters using public data instead of paid placement.

Why this exists

Most "most popular character" lists are either a magazine editor's opinion or a paid promotion. Both are opaque: you cannot see the inputs, and you cannot check the math. This site publishes both — the numbers and the formula — so any reader can recompute a ranking and get the same answer.

What we measure

Three public signals are combined into one HeatScore:

The exact weights, and the reason for each, are on the methodology page.

What you should not read into it

This is a popularity index, not a quality ranking. A high score means a lot of people are paying attention to a character. It says nothing about whether the writing, the animation, or the story is good. A character with a devoted but small fanbase can rank below a character with a larger casual audience, and that is the intended behaviour of a popularity measure.

Editorial independence

No one can pay for a position on any list on this site. There is no sponsored placement inside the rankings, no paid nomination, and no "boost my character" option. If display advertising ever appears on this site, it will be clearly separated from the ranking content, and it will never influence a position.

Coverage and its limits

The index currently tracks 150 characters and links 41 of them to a verified English Wikipedia article. Characters without such an article receive a neutral momentum value rather than a penalty, because a gap in our coverage should not be scored as a decline in popularity. This biases the ranking toward well-documented characters, and we state that openly rather than hide it.

Who runs this

Character Heat Index is run by Tony, a one-person independent project founded in 2026, built on free and public APIs: the AniList GraphQL API and the Wikimedia Pageviews API. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any anime studio, manga publisher, licensor, or streaming platform.

Corrections

If a number looks wrong, it probably is worth checking. Send the character name and what you expected to the contact page — data corrections are treated as a priority over new features.
